The wearing of feather masks to hide the identity of krewe members and revelers during Mardi Gras celebrations is part of a time-honored tradition. Rather than a feather mask on a stick which is merely held in front of the face to allow for a quick reveal, feather masks without stick are worn about the head and face so that the identity of the mask-wearer remains a mystery.

Feather masks are easily among the most popular Mardi Gras choices because in addition to looking gorgeous, the design and colors can help the wearer stand out in a crowd.

Feather Masks Without Stick are wearable works of art. Several different types of natural bird feathers are used in their design and construction. Ostrich feathers can range in length from half a foot to over two feet long and are employed for their length and fullness. Coque feathers have a natural sheen and are extremely thick and beautiful. Peacock plumes are a feather mask favorite because they showcase the signature peacock "eye". Peacock spears, by contrast, feature brown and black stripes in their thin elongated feathers.

A feather mask might feature all the same type of feather used in the design, or a variety of feather types for an even more dramatic effect. A sleek cat’s eye mask can be adorned with full feathered plumage down the right or left side of the mask for dramatic effect. Feathers can also be arranged so that the mask looks like a butterfly ready to take flight.
