Baseball Themed Monogram

Monday, July 23rd, 2012

If you’re looking for a unique gift or a way to dress up a door or bedroom, one way is the classic monogram. There are all different shapes and sizes of letters and all different ways to embellish them. From a simple to an elaborate paint job, sequins,  glitter…the possibilities are endless. And for the baseball enthusiast you know, why not…baseballs?

You can always go to a craft store and buy a pre-cut wood or foam letter of your choice. But if you want to save money, you can easily make the template yourself. A simple search of the internet  will give you lots of different styles to choose from. Print one out, or draw it freehand, on a piece of cardboard. Then cut it out, a little larger than the actual letter.

Start with a simple baseball and bat bead. The loop that attaches the baseball to the bead comes out easily with a little twist. Save the bead and the bat for later, and begin hot gluing the baseballs to your template.

Continue filling in, leaving room on the outside for a border if you want one. Try to fit the baseballs as close to each other as you can.

Once you have the whole letter covered with baseballs, it’s time for the border. This is a good place to use those bats we saved earlier. Again, twist out the loop on the end, and hot glue them around the edges.

You may have to overlap in some places, since the bats don’t curve.

When you’re finished with the border, all that’s left to do is attach a hanger to the back, and hang it from your door or wall. It’s a great way to personalize your space. You could also try this project with a wreath, a shelf, or anything else that you’d like to decorate.

Hank Aaron Stadium and Museum

Hank Aaron’s boyhood home and Museum

If you’re going to a baseball game this weekend at Hank Aaron Stadium, take a minute to stop in the Hank Aaron Museum, located on the stadium grounds. Aaron’s boyhood home, that his father built in 1942, was moved, renovated, and filled with donations from the Aaron family and from the Baseball Hall of Fame and the Negro League Baseball Museum.

Hank Aaron at the beginning of his career

Henry Louis Aaron was born on February 5, 1934, right here in Mobile, Alabama. He quickly displayed a talent for baseball, and played shortstop and third base in high school, dropping out in 1951 to play professionally. He first played for a team called the Indianapolis Clowns, and then in the minor leagues for a Milwaukee Braves farm team called The Eau Claire Bears. It was there that he quickly earned the Northern League’s Rookie of the Year title. Only a year later, he moved up to the Major Leagues.

Hank Aaron played for the Milwaukee Braves, Atlanta Braves, and the Milwaukee Brewers. He led the Milwaukee Braves to a World Series win, but it was with the Atlanta Braves that he accomplished what he’s best known for–breaking Babe Ruth’s homerun record. On April 15, 1974, he hit his 715th homerun against the Los Angeles Dodgers, and circled the bases to cheers, fireworks, and his parents congratulating him at home plate.

After retiring in 1976, Hank went on to work in the offices as the Braves’ vice president and director of player development. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1982.

Hank Aaron at the dedication of his museum

When Mobile built a stadium for its own team, it was only natural to name it after one of its most well-known citizens. The stadium opened on April 17, 1997, and Hank Aaron was on hand to throw out the first pitch. Since then, his boyhood home was moved and turned into a museum, with the dedication drawing a few of Hank’s friends, like Willie Mays, Reggie Jackson, and Ozzie Smith.

Aaron considered this one of his greatest honors, saying, “I have had great things happen to me, but today is the greatest day I have ever had in my entire life”. So take a minute to stop in, and check out more of the story behind the stadium’s namesake.
